Regenerative Medicine
Regenerative medicine uses your body’s own cells and healing mechanisms to repair, restore, and regenerate injured tissues—helping you recover more naturally and without surgery. These innovative treatments are designed to decrease pain, reduce inflammation, and promote long-term healing for tendon, ligament, joint, and muscle conditions.
At Sports Medicine of the Rockies, we specialize in three primary regenerative procedures: Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC), and Microfragmented Adipose Tissue (MFAT).
Non-Surgical Treatment Options
1. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP therapy uses a small sample of your own blood, which is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and growth factors responsible for tissue repair. The PRP is then injected under ultrasound guidance directly into the injured area to stimulate your body’s healing response.
- Promotes natural healing and tissue regeneration
- Reduces inflammation and pain
- Often used for tendon, ligament, and joint injuries
- Performed in-office with minimal downtime
2. Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC)
BMAC involves drawing a small amount of bone marrow—usually from the back of the hip—and processing it to concentrate stem cells, platelets, and growth factors. This cellular mixture helps enhance tissue repair and regeneration at the site of injury.
- Contains powerful healing cells and growth factors
- Used for more advanced or chronic injuries
- Performed under local anesthesia in-office
- Promotes long-term repair and reduced inflammation
3. Microfragmented Adipose Tissue (MFAT)
MFAT uses a small sample of your own fat (typically from the abdomen or thigh), which is processed to preserve naturally occurring cells, scaffolding, and signaling molecules that help support healing. The MFAT is then injected into the injured area under ultrasound guidance to cushion, protect, and restore damaged tissue.
- Minimally invasive, natural approach
- Targets pain and inflammation
- Promotes long-term healing and tissue regeneration
- Often used for joint degeneration and chronic soft tissue injuries
Surgical
Regenerative medicine procedures are non-surgical by nature; however, in certain cases where tissue damage is severe or structural repair is required, surgical options may be considered in coordination with an orthopedic surgeon. Our goal is to help patients avoid surgery whenever possible through advanced biologic therapies.
Recovery Timeline
- Most patients experience mild soreness for 1–3 days at the collection or injection site.
- Light activity can typically resume within a few days.
- Avoid strenuous exercise or high-impact activity for about 2–4 weeks, or as directed by your provider.
- Healing occurs gradually over several weeks to months as your body regenerates tissue.
Why Choose Sports Medicine of the Rockies?
